In the year 2010, Mama Risper Ayub a resident of Kisumu Ndogo slum in Mombasa volunteered to help in guiding and counselling women whose husbands had died of HIV/AIDS, under the Aphia II project. Slowly, Mama’s house became a home for many orphans whose parents had died of HIV/AIDS in the slum. It was then that the idea of starting an orphanage dawned on her, a place these children could call home, and she relentlessly pursued her dream.
In 2011, Cannan Orphanage was registered. It is certified with the Kenyan District Gender & Social Development Office as a self-help group/project. A financial report is filed annually with the Kenyan authorities.

Mama is the oldest of 13 kids, and was raised in a humble family with a strong Christian background. She has six children, most of whom are now grown up and living on their own. Mama came to Mombasa in search of greener pastures; she ran a small business selling fish at a well known slum, Kisumu Ndogo in Mombasa, for a long time. In the year 2010, she volunteered to help in guiding and counselling women whose husbands had died of HIV/AIDS, under the Aphia II project.
